This year’s Kufuluhela Traditional Ceremony was held on 6th August 2025, signifying the return of His Majesty the Litunga, Lubosi Imwiko II, from the Upper Land to his Lower Land Palace in Lealui. This grand event celebrates the rich culture and heritage of the Lozi-speaking people, uniting the community as they welcome their beloved King.
The Kufuluhela Ceremony is an annual spectacle that showcases the deep-rooted traditions of the Barotse Kingdom. It takes place when the water levels recede, allowing for ease of access to the Lower Land Palace in Lealui. The ceremony also signifies the return of the subjects who moved to the Upper Land during the Kuomboka Ceremony – when the plains were flooded. Limulunga Town Council takes great pride in being associated with this rich culture in every possible way, supporting its preservation and celebration.
The event symbolizes continuity and unity as the Litunga’s journey from Limulunga to Lealui is met with jubilation, traditional performances, and cultural displays.
The ceremony is also a vibrant display of Lozi cultural attire:
-
Men wear the Siziba, often adorned with traditional features, symbolizing strength and heritage. The paddlers and Lozi men complete their regalia with the Lishushu – a red beret representing bravery and the warrior spirit.
-
Women grace the occasion in the elegant Musisi, a beautifully wrapped fabric that embodies grace and cultural pride.
This ceremony is more than just a royal transition; it is a reaffirmation of the Lozi identity, bringing together generations to honor their history, customs, and the enduring legacy of the Barotse Kingdom.
